Love and fear, doubts and dreams, vividness and isolation—these opposites collide and blend in Joshua Tazman's music, a lushly textured, mysterious, and surprising blend of jazz, groove, and art song.

The 18-year-old jazz musician and songwriter spins a sophisticated, reflective web of sound, capturing the unsureness and vulnerability of becoming an adult with the insightful sophistication of an old soul. He draws from the enigmatic folk of Joni Mitchell, the cool vocal stylings of Chet Baker, and the adventurous harmony of modern classical composers combined with the funky, disjointed grooves of alternative RnB. He complements his own music with interpretations of jazz standards, showcasing his natural musicianship, horn-like scatting capabilities, and arrangements that are as sensitive as they are adventurous. Joshua is a vocalist, a pianist and a guitarist, and performs regularly around the Bay Area with his trio. He released his debut EP, Jump, produced by Mark Mazzetti for Record Company in a Box, in 2016 in conjunction with a sold out release party held at the California Jazz Conservatory in Berkeley.

Joshua has received an impressive set of accolades including winning the 2016 Downbeat Student Awards for High School Vocal Soloist, being named a candidate for the 2017 US Presidential Scholars in the Arts, and winning the 2016 PDX Jazz Forward competition. He has also performed with a wide variety of well-known jazz artists, most notably in an opening set for Universal Consciousness, a group that included great saxophonists Pharoah Sanders and Ravi Coltrane, in 2016. He has also sung with Great American Songbook interpreter Michael Feinstein, bassist Marcus Shelby, Brazilian pianist/composer Jovino Santos Neto, saxophonists Dave Koz and Michael Zilber, and vocalists Sandy Cressman, Dee Daniels, and Dena Derose. He graduates from high school this year and plans a tour and new recording this summer.

”Josh is an incredibly talented artist. His song writing blends pop, jazz and soul in ways that are unique and very appealing. I hear the records we made and I am taken by his compelling voice and the wonderful instrumental performances he laid down on piano and guitar on all the songs. This young man is going places and I’d say that means he is headed for the stars.”
— Mark Mazzetti, producer, John Mayer, Janet Jackson, Elton John
Josh is probably one of the most talented young musicians I’ve worked with in 30 years of teaching...He not only has a wonderful voice—far more mature or developed than you would expect from a teen—but he plays jazz piano very well and I think one of the things that sets him apart from any vocalists I’ve worked with are his compositions. He is writing constantly and has a huge body of work—a really enjoyable body of work—that has creative sophistication as well as an appeal that could reach listeners of all types.
— Laurie Antonioli, Chair of the Vocal Program at the California Jazz Conservatory and singer
You may not have heard Joshua Tazman’s music, but once you do, it’ll be tough to forget. As a vocal coach, I have encountered a plethora of talented singers. In Joshua, I’ve experienced a signature vocal sound & distinctive flavor that’s especially captivating. His sensual and warm vocal mood stands out in a multi-dimensional musical mix of original compositions that uniquely blends jazz, soul and pop styles into an emotionally moving experience. Josh is not only a sensitive storyteller through his lyrical and musical expression, but is also a compelling live performer, always responsive to the needs of his audience by remaining centered in the character of each song and authentic in presence.
— Raz Kennedy, vocalist and teacher, founding member of Bobby McFerrin's Voicestra
